Syrian Kurds: Lost in the Wilderness

In the battle between Syrian Kurds and Turks in Afrin, my thoughts and prayers are with the Kurds. Like Palestinians, the Kurds are another most unfortunate ethnic group in the region who have been fighting for their rights and dignity for decades. Saving geopolitical equations and implications, we must support Kurdish people’s right to self-determination. While most civil wars and domestic oppression are more of a fight between people for throne and state power, we must distinguish the fights of people whose struggles are more than state power — for a different cause, to save an entire ethnic group from forcing into submission and, at worst, from ethnic cleansing.

For whatever reasons the United States are supporting the Kurds (they have a history of betraying Kurdish people [in Iraq] in the past), they are at the right side of the fight, at least for now. United States did more than a commendable job in Kosovo, saving Bosnian Muslims from ethnic cleansing and giving them a state. They can certainly play a more constructive role in resolving the Kurdish issue by playing it honest and by isolating their any ulterior motives [so-called ‘containing Iran’ strategy].
